Workshop Integrated Pest Management

Integrated pest management, IPM, is a preventative and integrated approach to manage the risks of biological infestation and preventing damage to collections caused by such infestation. It involves more than just setting traps.

Why this course?

During the IPM workshop, participants will be introduced to the field of Integrated Pest Management, to manage the risks of biological infestation with the goal of preserving (heritage) collections. Participants will learn how to recognize IPM-related risks and what steps to take once they have identified a risk. This is being linked to the 5 steps of IPM: Prevent, Block, Detect, Mitigate, Control.

For whom?

This workshop is relevant for: collection managers, conservation and facility staff. Participants should have some understanding of museum procedures, such as depot management, (internal) collection handling, loans, climate (- monitoring), etc.

Program

Helicon welcomes you to Zoeterwoude in a group of up to 12 participants. The course day ise structured as follows:

  • Day 1
    • 09:00: Reception with coffee and tea
    • The role of IPM in collection management
    • Explanation of IPM policy
    • Break
    • Practice recognizing damage
    • Linking damage symptoms to causes
    • Lunch
    • Identify various pests
    • Practice reading sticky traps
    • Explanation of fungi in collections
    • Break
    • 5 steps of IPM: Prevention, Prevent, Block, Detect, Mitigate, Control
    • ±16:00: end of workshop

Certificate of participation

After the workshop, you will receive a certificate of participation, which we will send to you by mail. This is valuable recognition of your IPM knowledge and skills.

The lecturer

The course is taught by Meike van Gemeren. After studying marketing and communication, she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Cultural Heritage at the Reinwardt Academy. She worked at Artis, among other places, where, as a member of the Education Team, she was responsible for the use of collection items in a variety of activities: from exhibitions and lectures to audio tours and scavenger hunts. Since 2023, Meike has been a lecturer at Helicon. With her broad knowledge of management and conservation, CHV (collection emergency planning) and art handling, and her enthusiastic teaching style, she knows how to connect theory and practice in an inspiring way.
