KEEP! Alphen aan den Rijn

Helicon’s new building, currently under construction at Gouwelandenlaan 14 in Alphen aan den Rijn, The Netherlands, has been fully designed according to the KEEP!-concept. The building covers 6,000m² gross floor area, including 4,000m² of storage space, equipped with a PauseBox® and 700m² of preservation space.

A building that protects heritage and helps the sector progress

The building was designed with a clear vision: sustainable, scalable, and therefore consistent and, above all, cost-efficient and reproducible. The building’s features are focused on maximum protection and minimal energy impact. A rigid outer shell combined with a smart, internal insulation shell ensures stable climate conditions without energy-intensive systems. Thanks to the PauseBox®, passive climate control is implemented, fully compliant with the Dutch museum standards, archive regulations, and KNA regulations. The sophisticated fire separation and sustainable materials make the building not only safe but also future-proof.

The layout of the KEEP!-building in Alphen aan den Rijn:

  • Zone I Core Storage

    Zone I houses the core storage of the collection.

  • Zone II Workspaces

    Zone II is where the collection is being worked on. This area includes consultation rooms, studio/workshops, a room to freeze for disinfestation, a transit depot, a quarantine depot, and a laboratory.

  • Zone III Public and Facility Areas

    Zone III houses our own offices, as well as a conference/education room, meeting rooms, and a cafeteria.

  • Zone IV Outdoor Area

    Zone IV is our own site, naturally with several parking spaces, but above all, the logistical facilities to easily manage collection transport (inbound and outbound), connecting to the logistics within the building.

  • Zone V Outdoor Environment

    Zone 5 is the public outdoor area. Gouwelandenlaan 14 is part of the Schans II Business Park. The site is secured with cameras and is secured by a partnership between businesses and the police.
